  6. How do I add gift subscriptions?

Broadview makes a great gift idea and gift subscriptions are available for only $20 each (plus taxes)! Gift subscriptions are handled and processed directly by Broadview magazine since they are separate from your regular group subscription. We appreciate any assistance you’d like to give congregants in processing their gift orders as follows, or you can direct them to broadview.org/giftsubs:

    1. Go to Broadview.org/giftsubs
    2. Enter the name and address of the donor and that of the gift recipient(s)
    3. Enter Visa or Mastercard payment information
    4. A confirmation will be sent to the email address of the donor

  7. What is the subscription price?

The special discounted group subscription price of $25.00 per subscription for 10 issues annually is the lowest price available for Broadview magazine and unchanged from the past years. Each issue contains 16 more pages as well as better paper and a higher quality binding. Previously, 11 issues per year were published for the same price; mailing one less issue is more cost-effective (and you get more pages in total because of the 16 added pages per issue); also the new publishing schedule allows a holiday break around the end of year.

For subscriptions outside of Canada, the special discounted group subscription price is $35.00 for 10 issues. Please contact us at subscribe@ucobserver.org to add a subscription to your group for delivery outside of Canada.

  8. How do the Trial Subscriptions work?

New this year, you can sign up 2 new subscribers FREE anytime during the year! So, if you have a visitor or even someone who has been attending for a while but not subscribed, we encourage you to enroll them for a free-trial subscription. Their name will then appear on your group renewal list next time to decide whether to continue with a paid subscription. Just email us at subscribe@ucobserver.org and we will set them up for you.

    • Note: Some churches already have a process of providing a paid one-year subscription to new members as part of their Outreach plan; we appreciate if you can continue to do that! This new program is to inspire even further trial of the magazine beyond your current program.

  9. Our subscription expiry date changed when the magazine changed to Broadview – why?

We made two changes this year when we changed to Broadview and these affected your expiry date. You are still getting all the 11 issues that you have paid for.

The first change is cosmetic only. The cover dates on the front of the magazine were changed by one month to be more in-line with other consumer publications on the newsstands. For example, the issue that we previously would have called "September" is now called "October" so that it doesn’t look old when it comes out when compared to other magazines. This renaming has affected your expiry date.

(Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that the last issue of the Observer was called March/April and the first issue of Broadview is called May).

The other change is that we are moving to publishing 10 issues each year - each with 16 more pages - rather than 11 issues. You will get more pages in total each year. It is more cost-effective mailing one less issue and also it allows a break around the holiday season. Instead of publishing a December and a January issue, you’ll get one called "January/February 2020". You will be receiving all 11 issues that you paid for, because we’ve extended your subscription to be sure of that. So if your expiry was originally dated January 2020 or later, the subscription extension is the other reason your expiry date changed.

  10. How do I translate the Issue Number into an Expiry Date?

The issue expiry date on the group labels and online Group Portal is now presented as the Year and Issue number. Here is a table that translates these into Issue names:

    2019001 – January 2019
    2019002 – February 2019
    2019003 – March/April 2019
    2019004 – May 2019
    2019005 – June 2019
    2019006 – July/August 2019
    2019007 – September 2019
    2019008 – October 2019
    2019009 – November 2019
    2019010 – December 2019
    2020001 – January/February 2020
    2020002 – March 2020
    2020003 – April 2020
    2020004 – May 2020
    2020005 – June 2020
    2020006 – July/August 2020
    2020007 – September 2020
    2020008 – October 2020
    2020009 – November 2020
    2020010 – December 2020

GENERAL MAGAZINE QUESTIONS

  1. Why has The United Church Observer been changed to Broadview?

After doing much research, the publisher, board of directors and editorial staff decided to make some changes—both in print and online—to ensure that we have an informative and engaging magazine to enjoy for years to come.

This is the publication’s fourth name in its 190-year history. We felt that the name Broadview is more relevant for today’s readers and highlights both open-mindedness and inclusivity that defines today’s United Church of Canada. Aside from the name change, the biggest difference between The United Church Observer and Broadview is the new look and feel. We’re going to include more articles as well as more photos and illustrations. The new magazine will feature 16 additional pages in each issue.

We are pleased to announce that the magazine will soon be available on selected newsstands across the country, and subscription offers will reach like-minded individuals beyond the church pews later in the year.

Copyright laws prevent us from calling the new magazine "The Observer". In Canada, The Observer name is owned by a newspaper based in London, England — it’s the Sunday paper published by The Guardian newspaper. There is also a popular online publication in Canada called The National Observer. And as we move towards celebrating two centuries as a Canadian publication, we thought it was time for a new name!

  2. Will I still get my United Church of Canada news and perspectives?

Just like today, about a quarter of the magazine will be devoted to United Church news and perspectives. These stories will appear in a section called “United Church in Focus”. The rest of the pages will bring a progressive Christian lens to faith, ethical living and social justice issues.

PROMOTION QUESTIONS

  1. How should I promote renewals?

We’ve received great ideas from Reps on their best tactics to get renewals going and so are sharing some top tips here. You can get more information by clicking the Customer Service tab and then Promotional materials.

    2. Send group emails to your subscriber list and prospects
    3. Table display at after-service gathering combined with an announcement during service – ideally do this once or twice just prior to the renewal due date.
    4. Website promotion with magazine cover and Rep contact information.
    5. Sample magazines at your entryway.

We’d love to hear any ideas of feedback you may have on promoting the magazine. Email us as promote@ucobserver.org

In 2020, there will be 10 issues per year. There will be two issues that cover two months – the July/August issue which arrives in mailboxes at the beginning of June and the January/February issue which arrives at the beginning od December. The July/August issue has been combined for many years; the January/February issue is a new combination effective in 2020. See more information above in “why did our subscription expiry date change”.
